What is 40 for 40?
40 for 40 is a 40 day spiritual exercise for 40 bold men who desire to rise above themselves and be transformed into better likeness of Christ.
40 for 40 looks for 40 men who will commit to the disciplines of body, heart, mind and soul for 40 days. This spiritual exercise is led by Fr. Sy Nguyen. For more details on the program, please read the brochure.
Due to inusufficient registration numbers, 40 for 40 will not take place during Lent in 2020. Please check back in Lent 2021.
Q. What if I miss a teaching session?
A. The four teaching sessions are an essential part of the whole exercise. There is a roll call at each session. If you are not present, you are no longer among the 40.
Q. Can I break up the daily 40 minutes in silent prayer?
A. Yes, you can as long as they add up to 40 minutes daily.
Q. Can my fast on Fridays during Lent be counted?
A. Yes, as long as it is a true fast and not just an abstination from meat.
Q. Is there any chance to substitute something else for "no hot showers"?
A. No
Q. Does the daily rosary count in the 40 minutes in silent prayer?
A. Yes, the daily rosary can be part of the silent prayer and the visit to the Blessed Sacrament
Q. Can I watch the news on TV or listen to the news on the radio?
A. No. The only accepatable option is Catholic TV and Catholic radio.
Q. Can I watch video of religious movies?
A. Yes.
Q. In lieu of Matthew 6:6, can I not have my name printed and not do the public declaration at Mass?
A. No, in lieu of Matthew 5:14-16.
Q. Can I take lukewarm showers instead of cold showers?
A. The discipline only states "no hot showers" on purpose so as to leave it to the men to be as bold as they can be.
Q. What about reading the newspaper in the morning?
A. The idea is to preserve our mind from the world as much as possible for 40 days. Reading the newspaper does not help that goal. Read something of a spiritual nature instead.
