Spread joy in the surroundings in which you live or are active:  in the family, in the school, in the places of work and of play; above all spread joy to those who are alone, old, sick, or marginalized from society; to those who are absorbed in the daily rat race; to those who vainly seek joy where it is least to be found: in the murderous surrogates of drugs and alcohol; or in the fatal and empty recourse to consumerism and lack of commitment; and especially to those who have succumbed to the influence of the deplorable movements impelled in any way toward violence or lack of respect for others.  (Speech to Youth, Italy, June 30, 1985)
